Some Spiritual Messages from Great People

HARPING ON “YOU” AND “ME”
HAS TORN THE WORLD TO BITS,
BUT THOSE FIRMLY ENTRENCHED
IN FAITH, NO SUCH RIFT ADMIT.
(Kabir by K.C. Kanda)

GOOD MANNERS WITHOUT SINCERETY ARE LIKE A BEAUTIFUL DEAD LADY. STRAIGHT-FORWARDNESS WITHOUT CIVILITY IS LIKE A SURGEON’S KNIFE, EFFECTIVE BUT UNPLEASANT. CANDOUR WITH COURTESY IS HELPFUL AND ADMIRABLE.
(Sri Yukteswar Giri)

THINGS TAKE TIME TO RIPEN,
HASTE SERVES NO END,
THE PLANT FRUCTIFIES ON TIME,
HOWSOEVER HARD YOU TEND.
(Varind Kavi by K.C. Kanda)

IT IS NOT COMPASSION THAT SHOULD
IMPEL US TO WORK FOR OTHERS, BUT
RATHER THE IDEA OF SERVICE TO MAN,
RECOGNISING HIM TO BE THE VERITABLE
MANIFESTATION OF LORD SIVA.
(Sri Ramakrishna)

A CLEAN-HEARTED MAN OF TRUTH,
FREE FROM EVIL DEEDS,
EVEN IN THE IRON AGE,
A BLISSFUL LIFE DOTH LEAD.
(Tulsidas by K.C. Kanda)

A SAINT, A TREE, A WATER TANK,
AND A SHOWER OF RAIN,
ALL THE FOUR ARE BORN TO SERVE
WITHOUT AN EYE ON GAIN.
(Kabir by K.C.Kanda)

GOD CAN DO WHATEVER HE WANTS,
MAN IS WEAK AND VAIN,
GOD CAN CHANGE A MOUNT TO A HILL,
MAKE IT MOUNT AGAIN.
(Kabir by K.C. Kanda)

DEVELOP JOYFUL NATURE. ALWAYS KEEP
A SMILING AND CHEERFUL FACE. THIS WILL
GIVE YOU A GOOD PERSONALITY. PEOPLE WILL
LIKE YOU MUCH. HAVE AN AMIABLE NATURE,
A MODEST AND UNASSUMING TEMPERAMENT.

IF YOU HAVE THE BOW OF PATIENCE,
WITH THE STRING OF PATIENCE TAUT,
ON TOP AN ARROW, PATIENCE-STEELED,
GOD WILL HELP YOUR CAUSE.
(Sheikh Farid by K.C. Kanda)

ONE MUST LOVE ALL. NO ONE IS A STRANGER. IT IS GOD ALONE THAT EXISTS IN ALL BEINGS. NOTHING EXISTS WITHOUT HIM. NEVER THINK THAT YOU ALONE HAVE TRUE UNDERSTANDING AND THAT OTHERS ARE FOOLS.
(Sri Ramakrishna)
IMPROVE YOUR WORTH, ENRICH YOUR SOUL,
FORGET ABOUT THE SURFACE SHOW,
YOU CANNOT SELL A DRY COW,
EVEN IF YOU TRUMPETS BLOW.
(Varind Kavi)

THE GREAT HATE SELF-PRAISE,
HOLLOW BOAST DESPISE,
DOES THE DIAMOND EVER SAY:
MILLIONS IS MY PRICE?
(Rahim)

TO SPEAK AND ACT WITHOUT A THOUGHT,
IGNORING TIME AND PLACE,
IS SINNING ON THE GANGA BANKS,
OR SIGHING BENEATH THE BLISSFUL SHADE.
(Tulsidas)

WE ARE NONE TO INTERFERE,
GOD’S WILL PREVAILS,
THE MASTER MANIPULATES THE LYRE,
AS HE LIKES, PLAYS.
(Varind Kavi)

THERE IS SUCH A THING AS LOVING GOD
WITHOUT KNOWING WHY. IF THIS COMES,
THERE IS NOTHING MORE TO DESIRE. ONE
ENDOWED WITH DEVOTION SAYS, “O LORD,
I DO NOT WANT RICHES, FAME, HEALTH,
HAPPINESS OR ANYTHING ELSE. GRANT THAT I
MAY HAVE PURE DEVOTION TO THY LOTUS FEET.”
(Sri Ramakrishna)

ACTION LIES IN OUR HAND,
THE FRUIT RESTS WITH FATE,
WE CAN ONLY THROW THE DICE,
AND NOT PREDICT ITS SHAPE.

HOW CAN YOU EAT MANGOES
IF YOU SOW ACACIA SEEDS,
ITS A PROVEN TRUTH:
AS YOU SOW, SO SHALL YOU REAP.
(Tulsi)

MERCY LEADS TO GODLINESS,
GREED TAINTS THE MIND,
ANGER HAS THE SEED OF DEATH,
FORGIVENESS IS DIVINE.
(Kabir)

PRICELESS IS THE GIFT OF SPEECH,
PROVIDED THAT YOU KNOW THE ART;
BEFORE YOU TURN YOUR THOUGHT TO SPEECH,
WEIGH EVERY WORD IN YOUR HEART.
(Kabir)

DO GOOD EVEN TO THE BAD,
RENOUNCE REVENGE AND WRATH,
THIS WILL ENSURE GOOD HEALTH
FOR YOU, NOTHING WILL IT COST.

SWEET WORDS CAN QUIETEN DOWN

OF WATER COOL, BOILING MILK SUBDUES.
(Varind Kavi)

SEEK KNOWLEDGE FROM EVERY
SOURCE, BE IT HIGH OR LOW;
EVEN IF IT LIES IN MUD,
NO ONE LEAVES THE GOLD.
(Tulsidas)

The charitable man has found the path of salvation. He is like the man who plants a sapling securing thereby the shade, the flowers and the fruit in future years. Even so is the result of charity, even so is the joy of him who helps those that are in need of assistance; even so is the great Nirvana.
(Lord Budhha)

WHAT IS PUJA?

We all do Puja may be daily. May be my Non Indian friends do not know the meaning of Puja but I am sure they also perform it. The English equivalents of ‘Puja’ are homage, reverence, worship, respect, etc. the system and manner of doing Puja is different for different religions and places and the system of Puja generally relates to religions, deities and Gods. In some religions there is an elaborate system of rituals for Puja while in some religions it may be a simple method of prayer only.diwali puja 300x300 WHAT IS PUJA?

It is a fact that All the major religions of the world originated in Asia. Four Major Religions which are Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism and Sikhism were originated in South Asia (India). Other religion like Christianity and Islam originated in South- west Asia for which Jerusalem, Mecca and Madina are important places. All these religions are similar and concept of God exists in all these religions. Sikhism is the only religion in which Gurus existed and it concentrates on Gurus. But, the system of doing the Puja and prayers is associated with all the religions and this fact cannot be ignored. This system is visible in Today’s world also.

Hinduism is the oldest religion of the world in all. Its history is about 4,000 years long. Almost all the other religions except Hinduism evolved during the last 2.600 years. But it is to be noted that Hinduism developed after the 1st agricultural revolution which took place about 10,000 years ago and the intervening period was Vedic period in India during which such Puja systems had not taken roots.

Hanuman – Great Expert in Communication!

hanumanji1 Hanuman – Great Expert in Communication!Ramayana is a Great Indian Epic written by Valmiki and it clearly showed the importance of the power of communication. Most of the people consider Hanuman as just a person who is always chanting Ram bhajans. But they rarely know that he is a noble minister and an efficient ambassador. He is a man of action who is expert in all sciences. He is an expert in Vedas and he is an obedient servant to Lord Rama. He is also known as Great Mehndi pur Balaji and also Pawan Putra Hanuman. Whatever be his position, he always followed his dharma as an ideal idol to others.

His expertise in communication enabled him to dawn various roles efficiently and effectively. The new age managers can learn many things and take tips from Hanuman, the expert in communication, as hailed by Lord Rama himself. Hanuman knows the way he speaks and what he speaks. He is an expert in scientific communication. How Hanuman speaks is also analysed by Rama in Kishkindha Kaanda as told by Valmiki.

When Hanuman meets Rama for the first time on the outskirts of Kishkindha as Sugreeva’s messenger, Rama was charmed by Hanuman’s communication style and art of speaking. He tells his brother Lakshmana: ‘see how excellently Hanuman has spoken. He did not utter a single word without relevance and significance. He has not wasted a single word. Nor did he omit an appropriate word. He has not taken more time than it was strictly necessary to express what he wanted to say.

Every word that he spoke can never be forgotten. Such a voice promotes general welfare and remains forever in the hearts and minds of generations to come’. Isn’t it a brief statement of the fundamentals and essentials of how speech should be?

Again when Hanuman sees Sita in the Ashoka Grove in Lanka of Ravana, the Demon King, he exclaims, ‘to find Sita here is just like listening to a person who is lacking in word culture – who tries to say something but actually says something else!’ A mismatch between what one says and what one means.

Hanumana and the Incident of Patala

Once during the time of war, Lord Rama and Lakshmana were captured by the Mahiravanara rakshas and his brother Ahiravana. The devils hold them captive in their palace at Patalpuri well known as Patala. Ram bhakth Hanuman reaches Patala looking for Rama, where the gates of the palace were safe guarded by the incredible creatures having a part reptile and a part Vanara form and were known as Makardhwaja. This incident brought about Hanuman’s Panchamukha form. There is also a story of Makardhwaja’s birth, according to which when Hanuman had extinguished his burning tail in the ocean, one of his sweat had fallen into the water of ocean which eventually became Makardhwaja and thus this creature perceives Hanuman as his father.

And for this reason when Hanuman introduces him to Makardhwaja reaching Patala, he asks for Hanuman’s blessings but ultimately fights to perform his duty. Hanuman defeats and imprisons him to gain entry but discovers that to kill Mahiravana, the five lamps burning in different directions should be simultaneously extinguished. Clever Hanuman assumes the Panchamukha or five faced form of Sri Varaha facing north, Sri Narasimha facing south, Sri Garuda facing west, Sri Hayagriva facing the sky and his own facing the east, and blows out the lamps rescuing Rama and Lakshmana.

Rama and Sita literally present in the Heart of Hanuman

Hanuman was the one who flies to Ayodhya to inform Bharata that Lord Rama is on his way home after the war as Bharata had vowed to immolate himself if Rama does not return back to rule immediately on completion of the stipulated period of 14 years. Hanuman was embraced warmly by Rama after crowned Emperor and lord Rama also stated that he could never adequately honor or repay Hanuman for his so kind and helpful service.hanumanji Rama and Sita literally present in the Heart of Hanuman

Sita however thinks that Hanuman deserves an honour and so on Hanuman’s request she gives him her necklace of precious stones. Hanuman receiving it peers into each stone of the necklace and tells that he was looking into the stones to make sure that Rama and Sita are in them because without them the necklace was of no use to him. On this many people present there mock Hanuman and his love for Rama and Sita responding which Hanuman tears his chest open and everyone present there was stunned to see Lord Rama and Sita literally in his heart.

Hanumad Ramavana

Hanuman went to the Himalayas to continue his worship of Rama after the victory over Ravana where he scripted a version of the Ramayana using his nails. At that time Maharishi Valmiki visited Hanuman to show his own version of the Ramayana but became disappointed and stated that his labor will go ignored on which Hanuman discarded his own version which is called the Hanumad Ramavana. Valmiki got so touched with this that in his version he understated, he would take another birth to sing the glory of Hanuman.

After the war the time arrived for Rama to depart to his heavenly abode. At that time Hanuman requested to remain on the earth as long as Rama’s name exist and Sita accorded his desire granting him that his image would be installed at various public places so that Hanuman could listen to Rama’s name chanted by people and thus Hanuman is one of the immortals of Hinduism.

Hanuman is also known as the brother of Bhima as both have the same father, Vayu. During the exile of Pandava’s, Hanuman appeared as a weak and aged monkey and lied with his tail blocking the way of Bhima on the field. Bhima unaware of his identity asks to remove the tail to which Hanuman answered that Bhima should remove it himself. Bhima tried hard using all his strength but failed and therefore inquires into Hanuman’s identity. Bhima also requested and sees the same size of Hanuman in which he had crossed the sea to go to Lanka looking for Sita.

Popular folk art of Karnataka, Yakshagana depicts Hanuman as phophets, power and presence in the present age. Many prophets of modern times had claimed to have seen Hanuman such as Madhvacharya (13 Century A. D.), Tulsidas (16 th Century), Sri Ramdas Swami (17 th Century) and Raghavendra Swami (17 th Century), Swami Ramdas (20 th Century) and Sri Sathya Sai Baba (20 th Century). Swaminarayan strongly believes that other than worship of God, Hanuman is the only lower deity who can save us from the evil spirits and thus should be worshiped.

Wherever the deeds of Sri Rama are sung, the presence of Hanuman removes the fear of demons. A variation of such texts can be found in Tulsidasa’s Vinaya Patrika and the Mahabharata. Hanuman also reserves a special place even when Ramanpath takes place. Villagers consider Hanuman as their protective guardian. His images can be seen in a number of temples especially where images of Vishnu’s avatars are installed. It is believes that Hanuman idols and images keeps the area free from evils. It is also believe that Hanuman protects people from accidents and that is why his idols can also be found on mountain roads.

Stories of Hanuman and Shani

Shani, the planet Saturn, is said to have been saved by Hanuman from the clutches of Ravana and in return Shani promised that those people who will pray Hanuman will be rescued from the painful effects of Saturn.
shani hanuman 300x269 Stories of Hanuman and Shani
Once, Hanuman was meditating, when Shani came and started teasing Hanuman by pulling his tail. Hanuman warned him as Shani is his Guru’s son and Hanuman respects him but when Shani did not listened, Hanuman gave him a good thrashing. At the end Shani pleaded to leave and promised not to go near any devotee mediating on Lord Rama.

Also it is believed that one Shani climbed on to Lord Hanuman’s shoulder, implying that Hanuman was coming under the effects of the influence of Shani. At this, Hanuman assumed a large size making Shani caught between his shoulder and the ceiling of the room. When the pain was unbearable, Shani requested Hanuman to release him promising that he would moderate the malefic effects of his influence on all those people who pray to Hanuman.

Lord Hanuman is said to be the symbol of selflessness while Shani is symbolic of instant judgment on a person’s past and present karma accordingly. It is firmly believed that worship of Hanuman grants fortitude and strength. Hanuman is also believed to be the Lord of Mars and all the planets are under the control of his tail.

One of the most important, famous, religious festivals of Hindu is Hanuman Jayanthi which is celebrated on the full moon day (purnima), in the month of Chaitra to commemorate the birth of Hanuman. He was an ardent devotee of Lord Rama and thus is worshipped for his unflinching devotion to the God. People apply sindoor as tilak from the body of Hanuman which is believed to be the symbol of good luck. All the temples of Hanuman all over the country are full of devotees and people celebrated this day with full excitement. Spiritual discourses starts at dawn as Hanuman was born at sunrise and so all such deeds are stopped at that time and Prasad is distributed to everyone which provide strength and comfort to the devotee.

Hanuman is the machine of strength and enormous energy who is able to assume any form big or small, weak or powerful at his will. Hanuman is able to move huge mountains, break big rocks to pieces, dart through air, rival Garuda in swiftness of flight and even seize the clouds. Hanuman is the only one who is said to conquer the evil spirits and relieve the mankind from the effects of black magic.
